Tropical Storm Fengsen has killed eight people in the Philippines, officials said, and it could intensify as it heads into China and Vietnam.
Known locally as Ramel, the typhoon brought heavy rains, floods and landslides to the central Philippines over the weekend. The deaths included a family of five who died after a tree fell on their home, Office of Civil Defense spokeswoman Johnny Castillo said Monday.
Fengshin, with maximum sustained winds of 65 km (40 mph), is forecast to become a severe tropical storm once it exits the Philippines as it intensifies over the South China Sea. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, it is moving towards Hainan in China and then Da Nang in Vietnam.
“We were surprised by the volume of the rain,” Sheila Artlero, head of the disaster agency in central Cape Province, told radio station DZMM. “People called for rescue as the water level reached neck deep.”
The Philippines sees an average of 20 typhoons a year, resulting in deaths, injuries and damage to crops and infrastructure.
