With work on Death Standing 2: On the Beach, all eyes are on Kojima Productions’ next game, OD. Also known as Overdose, OD Kojima Productions is one of several games we know of from Hideo Kojima and his team, and is being made in partnership with Xbox Game Studios. Kojima has kept most of the details under wraps on OD, allowing the short reveal trailer to do the talking for him and to get fans of his work speculating about what he’s cooking up. Few more details about the game have emerged since it was first announced during the 2023 edition of The Game Awards. Here’s a closer look at everything we know about OD.
When will the OD be released?
The release date for OD is yet to be revealed, and we’re expecting the game to remain in incubation for a few years before seeing the light of day. Kojima, now in his 60s, is well aware that he can stay active in game development as long as his body and mind are intact, but the veteran developer has vowed to stay creative until he is physically unable to do so.

New teaser trailer
The most prominent glimpse of the game was shared during a Kojima production livestream in September 2025. In the new teaser trailer, OD’s backstory is shared in glimpses of reactive text that raise more questions than answers. From there, the video follows Sophia Lillis’ character as events unfold from her first-person perspective.
We don’t get enough of this video to know who Lillis is playing or why she accepts secret instructions when they’re sent under the door. Things get really weird when Lillis’ character lights some candles and plays up the PT vibes. After an increasingly disturbing sight, something or someone sneaks up behind him. The young woman looks panicked before he grabs her, but she doesn’t try to escape.
There may be a ghost in the game
The specific nature or supernatural aspects of OD’s story are yet to be revealed. However, Kojima has revealed that he has attempted to scan a room in a haunted location with an actual ghost.
“For OD, I want to go around the world where (there’s) kind of scary places,” Kojima said at the Beyond the Strand event. “I want to scan a ghost for the first time and I want to get an award for it.”
Through a translator, Kojima told viewers that he heard strange cracking noises in the studio after scanning the ghost room. Just to make sure the Spock didn’t follow them home, Kojima and company visit a shrine.
“Maybe the past was there, but it’s not there anymore,” Kojima explained. “But anyway, and that’s why we went to the shrine with Microsoft to make sure we had a safe build of the game.”
Casting update
The German actor—and one of the few actors—confirmed that Odo Kier died this year. Kojima contacted the actor after hearing of his death, and revealed that he planned to rejoin in early 2026 to film more scenes for the OD.
“I’m at a loss for words,” Kojima wrote. “It all happened very suddenly. Because of the strike, we weren’t able to shoot OD for a long time, and we were forced to reschedule to next year. Even during this time, Odo and I exchanged emails frequently. We stayed in close contact. When we met in Milan at the end of September, he told me that he was looking forward to shooting again next year.”
It is not known if Kojima will keep these new scenes or if he will use another actor to step in for Carey.
OD platform
Since OD is a collaborative project between Kojima Productions and Xbox Game Studios, it’s likely that we’ll see it on PC and Xbox Series X. Will launch on S first. The good news is that Microsoft has adopted a new multi-platform strategy for its first-party releases, so it’s possible that the game will launch elsewhere.
The OD story
So far, only the teaser trailer embedded above exists for OD. In true Kojima fashion, it raises more questions than it answers as the video shows the game’s three characters as floating heads against a black background, all engaged in top-notch acting. What’s really impressive here is that they’re all rendered in Unreal Engine 5 and augmented with Metahuman—Kojima Productions previously used the Decima Engine for their death-defying games—so you can only imagine how impressive things will look when the game finally arrives.
Throughout the trailer, the characters also recite a pangram, and there is one a lot Comment on what that means. Does this veiled zinger refer to Kojima’s departure from Konami or just pure gibberish? Who knows, but here’s the full price:
“Hungry purple dinosaurs ate zingy foxes, jabbering crabs, and crazy whales and started vending and quacking.”
OD gameplay
So what kind of game is OD? Kojima isn’t saying much, but he did mention in an interview that the basic concept is “a little dangerous” and difficult to explain. “It’s a game, but it’s a game like no other. I can’t go into too much detail, and it’s hard to explain,” Kojima said. “But in the realm of sports it’s a bit more dangerous and a new challenge for me.”
To be fair, Death Stranding was also difficult to explain before it was finally released, as post-third-person courier games introduced some wild ideas at the time. What we do know—thanks to the official synopsis—is that OD will be all kinds of horror and will feature performances by actors Hunter Schaeffer, Sophia Lillis, and Ado Kear.
The description reads, “A Hideo Kojima game, OD explores the concept of testing your fear threshold, and what it means to be scared—while blurring the boundaries between gaming and film.” We also know that Kojima is partnering with Oscar-winning filmmaker Jordan Peele for OD, who knows a thing or two about making unsettling content.
