Editor’s note: This year, ahead of its 45th year in business, Anna Sui published a book on her collections from the ’90s. To celebrate this, and as part of our ongoing efforts to document the history of Vogue runway fashion shows, we’re closing out 2025 by adding two new digitized shows from that era to the site. The Fall 1995 collection was presented in New York on April 6, 1995 in the Bryant Park Tents.
Picture it… swinging London, but transported and updated to 90s New York. The purr of a motor at the end of the runway precedes the appearance of a Snow White Vespa. It’s driven by a long-haired chap in black leather, tight pants. In the back, Linda Evangelista wears a clean single-breasted tweed suit with a black turtleneck, sunglasses, and patent leather sneakers. Mood with suppon of existentialism.
As always, Anna Sui had her finger on the pulse of what was happening at the nexus of fashion and music. The designer wrote Vogue At the time, “Sidhe went straight to the sources of his ideas: David Bailey’s photographs of 1960s icon Jane Hampton, early WHO publicity shots, and a new Beatles album. But to prevent his style from becoming completely retro-retrods, he drew on others as well. today”
Collision was not included in this list, but the collection was full of unexpected material collisions. Black and white were necessarily contrasted in dress and two-toed shoes. The oil sheen of the patent contrasts with the dull scratch of the tweed. Wild leopard prints paired with pair of checks. And second skin latex mixed with appropriate herringbone. At the end of the show, a dress made of iridescent sharkskin taffeta was pitted against the club-ready glitz of vivid sequins on a camouflage print.
It has always been the case that the action goes beyond the catwalk at Anna Sui. “Iggy Pop and Mariana Faithful were there!” The designer persuaded. . Sex and the City And gossip girlJeez
