Chilean President Gabriel Borque declared a state of disaster in the country’s two southern regions, where wildfires have killed at least 15 people and forced tens of thousands to evacuate.
“All resources are available,” Bourque wrote in a post on X about the decision early Sunday before heading into the borough area. Declaring a state of disaster allows the Chilean government to provide emergency aid to affected areas.
According to Security Minister Luis Cordo, at least 15 people have been killed in the Biobo region in southern Chile.
More than 50,000 people have been evacuated from more than 24 fires across the country. Interior Minister Alvaro Alzaralde said in a live press conference that the majority of the fires are in the southern and southern regions of Baubo.
Elizalde warned that the weather forecast for Sunday and the rest of Monday is “not good.” “They account for extreme temperatures and that makes the situation more complicated than fighting forest fires.”
