- Stellantis has decided to have diesel engines in its product portfolio in Europe.
- The automaker continues to produce diesel versions of the Alfa Romeo Stelvio, DS 7, and other models from Peugeot, Opel and Citroën.
- The company is doing this because ‘we are focusing on customer demand.’
Stellantis has undergone tremendous changes over the past year. The automaker put the Hemi V8 back into the Ram 1500, shut down Chrysler and Jeep’s plug-in hybrids, and killed Ram’s electric truck before it hit the market. Now, the company is reviving and keeping diesel engines in Europe.
The car maker said Reuters“We decided to keep diesel engines in our product portfolio — and in some cases — to expand our powertrain offerings.” Stellantis said it is doing this because “we are focusing on customer demand.”

According to the report, Stellantis is quietly reinstating the powertrain in at least seven European models from late 2025, even though diesel sales have fallen this decade following Volkswagen’s Dieselgate scandal. Only 7.7 percent of new car sales on the continent in 2025 were diesel.
The publication reports that Opel, Peugeot, and Citroën models are getting diesel options again. The automaker also said it will continue production of the DS 7 and diesel versions of the Alfa Romeo Tonale, Giulia, and Stelvio “in response to continued customer demand.”
Motor1’s Tech: Consumer demand for electric vehicles in Europe has not been as strong as expected, making it difficult for automakers to decide what they want to build. The Stellenbosch returning to diesel makes sense because Chinese automakers have cornered the EV market, so the European automaker must differentiate itself.
