Winter Storm Hernando continues to affect the Northeast. The National Weather Service has issued a blizzard warning for millions of people from the Mid-Atlantic to southern New England, with the blizzard expected to rapidly deteriorate Sunday afternoon and reach full blizzard intensity Sunday night into Monday morning.
States of emergency are already being issued. The forecast changed dramatically in 24 hours, making it a very dangerous, fast-moving winter storm.
The storm is expected to dump 12 to 18 inches of snow over much of the area, with some areas getting up to 24 inches or more. Snowfall rates of 2 to 3 inches per hour are possible at peak intensity, and wind gusts of 40 to 60 mph will produce near whiteout conditions. A low pressure system is rapidly strengthening, leading meteorologists to call it a “superbomb” cyclone, with actual blizzard conditions potentially lasting 10 to 12 hours.
