Kentucky, far inland from where most hurricanes hit but a place all too familiar with high winds and hail, has become the latest state to offer grants for reinforced roofs.
Gov. Andy Beshear announced this week that the Strengthen Kentucky Homes Program began March 1 and already has received more than 150 grant applications. The program was authorized in 2024 by State House Bill 256, which earmarked $5 million for homeownership grants.
“This program will help Kentuckians strengthen their homes, and give families peace of mind when the next severe weather hits,” Beshear said in the statement. “Even better, it will also help them save money when people need it most.”
This program, like others around the South, provides grants of up to $10,000 for roofs constructed to the FORTIFIED standard developed by the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety. The standard calls for a secondary water barrier under the shingles along with reinforced shingles, roof-to-wall connections, and fasteners.
The program is now seeking qualified contractors and appraisers for specialty providers for homeowners who receive grants through the program.
“Qualified contractors and appraisers ensure that homeowners who receive these grants receive the quality products they expect. These professionals are a critical part of the program’s success,” said Kentucky Insurance Commissioner Sharon Clark.
Interested contractors and evaluators can visit SKH.ky.gov to learn how to become a certified provider. Homeowners can visit the site to apply.
The program doesn’t guarantee an HO insurance premium credit, but Clark said insurers typically reward stronger homes with discounts.
