In May 2024, Apple did something he had never done before: he launched his next generation computer processor inside his latest iPad Pro instead of MacLeep or Desktop. It was an unusual start for a new chip called Apple M4. But before this processor was just a matter of time.
Since then, Apple M4 has brought Mac Laptop (MacBook Pro and MacBook Air) and desktops (Mac Money, Mac Studio, and IMAC). The more powerful M4 Pro is available in Mac Mini and MacBook Pro, while M4 Max MacBook is an option in Laptop and Premium Mac Studio.

Since the initial announcement of Apple’s new M4 chips, we have reviewed samples of all M4 models. Click through deep divers on each:
You can now get the base M4 chip in many systems, but these machines have different thermal designs and obstacles, so in practice, chip will perform different from computer to computer. It will also be implemented differently. Meanwhile, M4 Pro and M4 Max seriously promote basic counting and electricity capacity from Base M4.

Based on the data from Apple’s specifications to our own lab testing, we know all about how the M4 Trey is against his predecessor, focusing on comparing the base level M3 and M4 chips.
Apple M3 vs. M4: Comparison
Regarding hardware specifications, the difference between M3 and M4 is a degree. Both chips use Apple’s 3 nanomometers (NM) manufacturing process and similarly gross architecture. In simple terms, both chips use a mixture of performance cover and low strength “performance” cover. Both processors also have powerful integrated graphics, supporting hardware -ray tracing and mesh shedding, and both chips include Apple’s dynamic cash technology.
So, what is different? From the number of processor cores to graphics, display, and AI capabilities, Apple M4 increases several chip elements. Let’s look at everyone in detail.
We have reviewed every Apple M4 Mac
Increase in M4 processor core
The previous Apple M3 chip had eight processor core, four of which were four performance core and four performance core. The M4 chip connects with these four full fat performance core, with six performance cores hitting the total basic count of 10.

This increases the total basic count of M4 in any taste above the primary M3, but in particular, it is less than Apple’s stepups for MacBook Pro Laptop. This Pro Grade Processor has 12 total CPU core, six of which have performance and six performance covers.
M4 graphics cover and abilities
Apple’s M4 Integrated graphics hardware has the same eight or 10 GPU cores you can get in the same number of M3 chip and GPU core, which is M2 predecessor. Other features of the GPU are not new to the current M-Series chips-that is, dynamic catching and hardware acceleration for ray tracing and mesh shedding, but all of them have benefited from new payments to basic GPU architecture.

M4 nerve engine development
Apple’s nervous engine is a dedicated part of the silicon made for AI and machine learning features. This is the late model “Alka Lake,” “” “Lunar Lake,” and “Aero Lake” equivalent to Intel’s neural processing units (NPU) in the processor families. Although there has been no changes to the basic count of the new Apple chip, the M4 16 -core neural engine has been classified 38 tips, or the eligibility of trillions of operations every second, more than 20 Tips can be pulled more than M3.

It is safe to say that with a creative suit of Adobe, the key creative apps depending on local processing, with the addition of interest around AI tools and features, Apple is trying hard to maximize this capacity. We have to wait for further information or testing to see how it has improved and the effects of the real world.
M4 display technology updates
Apple’s display engine handles automatic features such as brightness and color adjustment, but it also supports the promotion, Apple’s dynamic 120Hz refresh rate technology, from the iPhone to everything from the MacBook Pro. This is not new.

What Is However, the new M4 is the first Apple chip with dedicated display engine hardware, which offloads display -related tasks from CPU and GPU. The result is the support of high -speed offers, video editing and smooth performance for playback tasks, and expansion for external display. And it is at the top of running a clear color and better HDR performance than average, promised to Apple’s latest display.
M3 vs M4: compare the base model performance
In our studies, we subject to each Mac with benchmark tests, processing, content creation, and energy efficiency (battery life). We also test integrated GPUs, measuring graphics rendering tests and performance in gaming. These test results usually show clear improvements made, as the M4 score is better than the M3 chip equal to 2023.
We test the performance of the processor with San Bench 2024 for 3D rendering, Gack Bench for General Application Simulation 6.3 Pro, and Hand Brake for Video Transcoding 1.8. Wee Wee, we use a Pijet Bench for Photoshop, which automatically automatically works image editing tasks.
Here, you will see a significant difference between M4 and M3 chips, in which M4 chips permanently produce better scores and speed.
Our graphics tests include 3DMark’s Wildlife Extertium and Steel Gypsy Light to evaluate GPU speed. Then we specifically add solar help for ray tracking testing.

The same clear distribution between M3 and M4 was seen in our graphics tests, thanks to the better GPU core architecture of M4. Improved tracing of rays shown in the solar bay is especially impressive. The results of these results are 14 inches MacBook Pro with the second standout M4, which squeezes the capacity more than the M4 chip. The high thermal management of the system offers a better sustainable performance than inactive cooling MacBook Air.
Finally, our battery life test uses a long play video to remove the battery, which tests the system’s energy -saving.
Battery life across MacBook Air and Pro Model is impressive Both Chips, usually show the extraordinary energy efficiency of the M -series. With this series, Apple provides real life of the battery all day. Of course, the M4 is still ahead of M3, MacBook Pro extends over 28 hours with M4 chip and large battery with 14 inches and its larger battery is through thick chassis.
Most importantly, M4, even in base level chips, provides rapid production speed, improved graphics performance and longer battery life in its different implementation.
M3 Pro and Max vs. M4 Pro and Max: forward to the limits
But the M4 chip is just the beginning. Apple’s two soup -up M4 processors, which are among some of the classic Mac computers, were built on 3 Nanometer (3NM) Foundation of the second generation of M4. Their purpose is to provide a significantly higher performance than base chip and generation benefits than M3 Pro and M3 Max.
Since this article is primarily visible at base level M3 and M4 chips, we will only touch the basic specifications for each pro and maximum variations. To take a keen eye on the M4 Pro and Max Performance, read our Apple’s M4 Silicon Testing piece.

Here are the key sugars for the previous generation. The M3 Pro 12 processing core (five or six performance core, depends on the model, and six performance cover), up to 18 GPU core, and a flat 16 nerve engine cover. M3 Max further pushes things: up to 16 processing core (10 or 12 performance core, as well as four performance covers), up to 40 GPU core, and the same 16 nerve engine core.

Now there is a roundown for a new generation. M4 Pro has upset the 14 -core CPU and 20 -core GPU count while sticking to the 16 -core nerve engine. Meanwhile, the M4 Max is similar to the total number of core from M3 Max, which is not a change. Nevertheless, the key distinctions in performance are the advantages of the M4 platform, which are described in the aforementioned section, and the memory bandout increases by 75 %. M4 Pro and M4 Max also enable the first Thunderbolt 5 USB-C support.

What does it increase? Apple’s announcements mention the fastest CPU core with M4 Pro and M4 Max in any processor. Inside New McMuni, which has never seen an M3 -based version, the M4 Pro is allegedly twice faster than the M2 Pro Bearing Mac Machin. On the graphics front, Apple says high GPU -core ray tracing operations are twice as much as the M3 generation.

Obviously, the M4 Max has the potential for new M4 chips. – Apple estimates that M4 Max provides 3.5 times the performance of M1 Max-not comparing the NS, but interesting news if you have not been upgraded since the start of M-Series chips.
Since these claims, we have tested the M4 Max -powered Mac Studio, which performed extraordinary performance, matching or defeating the old M2 ultra in many tests. Single -core performance is the best Apple and the fastest you will find in MacBook (often in Mac Studio). In general, you will see a division between M3 and M4 Pro and Max chips that we have shown between the twenty M3 and M4.

Should you upgrade? From the M2 or M1 model, of course – but not so fast with M3
Since the M4 chip was launched in the early 2024, we have been able to test many different Mac laptops and desktops. We are impressed with how well the performance is similar to Apple’s claims, showing a decent step forward in capacity.
However, in comparing the M3 chips, the M4 processor does not appear to jump forward and forward, but in a 30 % improvement range. Not bad, but is it worth buying a new laptop or desktop to change your M3 model? You will need to ask yourself how much benefit you now have, rather than waiting for the inevitable fifth -generation M5 chips.
