This 1939 memento is now the most expensive comic book on Earth — and maybe even on Krypton.
An ultra rare copy of Superman #1, the highest ever, has just broken auction records to become the priciest comic book to go under the hammer. The treasure sold for $9.12 million through Heritage Auctions on Thursday, as part of the house’s signature comic book program.
Like the Man of Steel, this collector’s item has quite the backstory. A Northern California family discovered Capec last year in their late mother’s attic, where it was stored only in a box by a stack of old newspapers. Those gazettes did one amazing thing, though: copy it Superman No. 1 snagged a 9.0 on a 10-point grading by CGC, a third-party grading service. This means that it is one of only seven known iterations to be rated 6.0 or higher.
In addition to its amazing origins, the comic book itself is a special moment in history. Superman The No. 1 marks the first time a character debuting in a comic has had their own honor dedicated entirely to them, according to Heritage Auctions. This practice is common in today’s world, but this comic book was the first step in helping to bring this singular superhero’s focus to a more mainstream audience.
“What a day,” Lon Allen, vice president of Heritage Auctions, said in a press statement. “I’m very excited for our consignor. Superman #1 is a landmark in pop culture history, and this copy is not only in exceptional condition, but has a movie-worthy story behind it. I’m happy to see the price reflect that and to be entrusted with this iconic book.”
Clark Kent has enough fitness to hit the milestone on the block. The previous auction was an 8.5 grade copy of Recorder Holder Action Comics #1where Krypton’s favorite hero first appears on the page. This 1938 collector’s item sold for $6 million at Heritage Auctions in April 2024. It seems the only person who can defeat the Man of Steel is himself.
