France and Germany on Friday criticized European laws regarding digital services, saying that any American repression would be fulfilled by retaliation, so France and Germany defended Europe’s right to adopt their technology legislation.
On Monday, Trump threatened to slap additional taxes on all countries with digital tax, legislation or regulations, saying he was designed to disperse or discriminate against US technology on EU’s rules on digital services.
Addressing a joint news conference with the German leader, French President Emmanuel Macron rejected the threats, saying that any move by the United States to challenge the block regulations would be fulfilled by the European Union retaliation.
“Tax and rules are the protection of our national parliament and the European Parliament,” Macron said. “We will not allow anyone else to decide for us,” he said.
He cited the European Union’s anti -screening device, adding, “If such measures are taken, it will be eligible as a force and will indicate the response from the Europeans.”
The Trump administration has permanently criticized the European Union’s digital markets act, which seeks to stop the power of tech giants, and requires a major online platform to deal with illegal and harmful content.
Talking to Macron, German Chancellor Frederick Mirz said he had told Trump how the European Union regulates its digital market, it is a manifestation of the block’s sovereignty, and that he cannot accept anyone on this question.
“We are doing this in our own interests and for our own benefit, and we will not guide them through statements that probably understand completely different, perhaps even or not, the rules are needed.”
The European Commission said earlier this week that organizing economic activities was the independent right of the European Union and its member states.
The commission strongly rejected Trump’s statement that the European Union was targeting US companies, and urging the DMA and DSA to apply for all platforms and firms working in the block.
