Update at 9:30 a.m. ET: Google says the Gmail bug is now fixed. “We will publish an analysis of the incident once we have completed our internal investigation,” it said.
Original story:
Google’s email filtering on Gmail is on the fritz today, as messages usually directed to promotions or social tabs are showing up in the primary inbox. Some people are also seeing spam alerts on legitimate emails.
In a statement, a Google spokesperson said the company is “aware that some Gmail users are experiencing misclassification of emails in their inboxes and additional spam warnings. We are actively working to resolve this issue. As always, we encourage users to follow standard best practices when engaging with messages from unknown senders.”
The trouble started on Saturday morning, with users on social media complaining about the “very annoying” glitch. “The @gmail spam filter broke absolute email armageddon for me this morning,” wrote one X user. Another added, “Gmail filters didn’t pick up right and overloaded inbox. Just deleting like crazy.”

The tweets handling the support team directed at the Gmail X account didn’t understand what was going on at first. People who complained earlier today about Gmail filtering being broken or spam detection “acting a little weird” were directed to a support page or encouraged to DM the account with details. The account later acknowledged the issue and told people to check the company’s status dashboard.
In my personal account, LinkedIn notification emails showed up in the primary inbox, as did promotional emails from retailers and select newsletters that I had linked to promotions.

The tabbed inbox option on Gmail has been around Since 2013 And lets you block the arrival of marketing emails in their own inbox so that important messages aren’t missed.

If you’re seeing emails in the wrong tab, you can drag them to the right one and tell Gmail to send all further messages from that email there too. Ideally, Google will fix one soon, so you don’t have to spend your week dragging and dropping. Until then, keep tabs on this status dashboard for updates.

I started covering tech policy in DC National Journalwhere my beat included state-level tech news and all the congressional hearings and FCC meetings I could handle. I later covered Wall Street trading tech before switching gears to consumer tech. I now lead PCMAG’s news coverage and manage our how-to content.
Getting my start in DC means I still have a soft spot for tech policy. Congressional hearings can sometimes be as entertaining as a Bravo reality show, for better or worse. But PCMAG is all about the technology we use every day, as well as keeping an eye on the trends that will shape the industry in the coming years (or flop on arrival). I’ve covered the rise of social media, the iOS vs. Android war, the bone-chilling revolution that’s now left us with hefty bills, and the effort you’re trying to build artificial intelligence into every product. This job has taken me to CES in Vegas (too many times), IFA in Berlin, and MWC in Barcelona. I also drove a Tesla a thousand miles west as part of my Best Mobile Networks project. Of late, my focus has been on our hard-working team of reporters at PCMAG, leading and editing robust coverage of satellite Internet efforts, electric vehicles, the latest cyberattacks, AI and more.
I wouldn’t consider myself an early adopter. I hung onto my iPhone XR until I traded it up to the iPhone 15. My aging Apple Watch Series 4 was finally replaced by the Series 10 last year. On desktop, it’s all Windows for me. I’ve tried macOS, but alas it’s not for me.
