Google Maps users are recently complaining to places like Reddit that their timeline data – the historical record of the app where it has been – disappeared. Now, Google has confirmed that it has mistakenly deleted the data and that anyone who was not using Google’s cloud backup is out of fate.
Google Spokeswoman Jennio Park provided this statement in an email Stuffy:
We briefly tested a technical problem that has deleted timeline data for some people. Encryated timeline backup almost every EVERYONE person will be able to restore their data. Unfortunately, those who did not have a backup will not be able to recover lost data.
In a reddit post Android Authority Spotted, users reported a similar statement in an email from Google that included instructions for the data recovery for people who turn on the app’s cloud backup feature. To see if it continues for you, tap your user’s icon in the iOS or Android Google Maps app, then find a cloud icon with an “your timeline”, and inside it (on) or through it (off) (off). You can tap the icon to change your backup settings.
Google last summer warned users that they were turning on device storage for Google Maps location data. This meant that you could keep track of your map space without tracking Google’s servers, which is great for privacy, but suddenly comes with the risk of ending, as shows Google’s “technical problem”. And unfortunately, when the Google Maps allows you to export location date data to a file, guidelines for the recovery of Google’s timeline data do not include any clear way to recover the data that does not include cloud backup servers.
