Guillermo del Toro is an undisputed master of storytelling, and finally, his adaptation of Mary Shelley’s classic tale of Victor Frankenstein is now streaming on Netflix, with a limited US theatrical run. Film buffs may want to check out two upcoming books that take a closer look at the making of the film. The first, Frankenstein: Written and Directed by Guillermo Del Toro, launches on October 28 and is a behind-the-scenes look at the film. This will be followed by Frankenstein: The Complete Screenplay on November 25, a hardcover edition of the film’s complete script that includes a selection of additional material.

Frankenstein: Written and directed by Guillermo del Toro is a breakdown of the film’s production, starting with a collection of concept art from the early days of pre-production when the film was in full production and various period-specific props created. Films directed by del Toro are known for their sense of physicality and authenticity, and this 334-page hardcover book explores the filmmaker’s creative process through his development sketches of Frankenstein’s monster, set photos, special storyboards, and costumes.

Frankenstein: The Complete Screenplay is a 240-page paperback volume that includes the complete script for the film presented along with a collection of concept art, film stills, and behind-the-scenes photography. It also includes stories related to the film’s production, giving readers insight into how del Toro adapted Shelley’s classic story for modern times.
Mary Shelley’s original novel—titled Frankenstein: Or, The Modern Prometheus—was first published in 1818, yet it remains a popular book two centuries later. If you want to read it for yourself, there are several new and upcoming editions of the book available. Frankenstein – The Netflix Tie-In Edition is a new paperback printing of Shelley’s novel featuring new cover art from del Toro’s film. It launches on October 28 for $18, and is available in advance on Amazon.
If you prefer the hardcover edition, there are a few options available. Most exciting is the new Frankenstein: Menalema Edition, which also launches on October 28. The $45 premium hardcover book features all-new cover art and interior illustrations, as well as seven interactive elements such as a fold-out map, diary entries, and more. Available in advance on Amazon. Menalema has produced several other premium interactive hardcover editions of classics—including ones del Toro fans will enjoy, such as Pinocchio.
Three other hardcover versions of Frankenstein are now available, including the Deluxe Illustrated Classic Edition selling for $23.36 ($40), the Deluxe Painted Edition for $15.79 ($35), and the $15 Deluxe Hardbound Edition.

Although he is best known for his films, Guillermo del Toro produced several other books throughout his career. This includes novels like the Strain series, as well as behind-the-scenes non-fiction books that explore the creation of his films such as The Shape of Water, Pan’s Labyrinth, Pinocchio, and more. It includes a new upcoming print from Guillermo del Toro: Cabinet of Curiosities, which collects the filmmaker’s notebooks into one large hardcover tome. Advances for the new edition are available for $60 ahead of the October 28 release.
