When I was caught with Dr. Jean Gadal in 2023, she was visiting the Espen Center for Environmental Studies in Colorado, where she gave three lectures to local schoolchildren by the roots of the Jean Gadal Institute and her youth organization. It was an early fall in Colorado, and the last summer Humming Birds slipped from flowers to flowers before they went to their fall. An animal expert, who confesses not only loving birds, but also all living beings, was in its element in the wild landscape.
Then 89 and still traveling for more than 300 days every year for personal events, Dr. Gadal was as brilliant as usual. When we mourn it on October 1st, T+L Trail Bills is taking a look at our 2023 interview with the Bills Zoologist:
Travel + leisure: I am interested in your ideas about the role of animal and protection in developing countries, especially in Africa. How can tourism benefit the local ecosystem and residential wildlife?
Jane Gadal: Well, it has two sides. The basic answer is, how is the tourism management? This is an absolute key. In many countries, the government has come to know that people will go to the Mountain guerrillas to visit. So the researchers there said, ‘There are no more than six people at a time, and they cannot stay for more than an hour.’ Well, the governments there think, ‘Well, we get all this money for six. Now we will make it a map on twelve. ‘Many tourists are getting in these areas and they are affecting animals. It is hitting the laughter that gives the golden egg.
Is there a solution? Can any responsible traveler be?
I have no solution, and sometimes tourism exploits animals a lot. But for various reasons, tourism management is very important. One, this tour has a huge impact on people, especially if they have a local guide that not only knows about lions and elephants, but also knows about birds and perhaps butterflies, so that if you do not see big things, you can still be entertained. And the benefits of the country mean that national parks also get more money. In parks and nearby hospitality – there is a lot of jobs in hotels and restaurants – which provides many jobs. Locals begin to see the value of the animals.

You are right in this place and in fact you want to fight animals with your own eyes to protect you.
There is no question about it. When you look into the eyes of the chimpanzee, the gorilla’s eyes, or the elephant’s eyes, it changes you.
A portion of your infinite schedule around the world has to assure people that the hope of the environment is not gone, and that individual actions can make a difference.
Individuals can play their role even if it is not just using pesticides on its lawn or supporting places for Hummingbirds or flies. It can be so easy. Don’t eat meat or start eating meat one day a day. Industrial meat is bad for you, it is terrible for animals, and it is destroying the environment. So even if everyone on the planet, who is still eating meat, stopped it for just one day and then for two days, it would make a lot of difference.
Your lectures have recently focused on the idea that a better world is hopeful. I share in your hopefulness, but sometimes it feels like things get deeper and deep. What do you drive to continue?
If I did not know that going to a place made any difference, I would not continue. And I just know that people tell me. I get letters saying, ‘I have given up. But after your lecture, I promise you that I will do my job. “Hundreds of youths have written to say that the best thing to join the routes and shoots was (they). Even in Tanzania, a 12 -year -old boy said, ‘Unless there are roots and shoots, I did not know that animals had feelings. Now, as long as I am alive, I will never hurt another animal. ‘It’s amazing.
Are you still surprised that this is the beginning of your life? Amazing legacy that you have been able to make?
The only way I said is to counter this madness, well, there are two jeans, this is one, I’m talking to you, absolutely common, and then the icon created by the National Geographic. I pass through an airport that contains dark glasses and down my hair, and still people recognize me. So I thought, okay, okay, just to use it, so I’ll use it.
And then, when – if – you finally decide to turn off the journey, who will be the next gene Gadal? Do you think the next gene will be one of the children who have heard your message?
I think the genes gaddal will be abundant. I mean, no one can be mine. I lived 90 years. You can’t expect a child to know all the things you learn in 90 years. But hobbies, determination, dedication, children today have all this. Some children are doing amazing things. They hope that nature can return if you give it a chance, even in the completely destroyed places. And animals can be given another opportunity on the edge.
