In just the last few years, the Art TV category, which has been dominated by Samsung’s The Frame, has seen growth with the addition of both TCL and Hosans. Now LG has announced its entry, the LG Gallery TV. The TV will take advantage of the Gallery+ service that LG released earlier this year, which includes thousands of display visuals, from art pieces to cinematic images to gaming scenes. Like Samsung’s Art Store, Gallery+ has a limited free option, but requires a subscription to its full potential.
The new Gallery TV should not be confused with the G Series OLED TVS, such as the LG G5, although the G Series was called the Gallery Series until a few years ago. The Gallery TV is a mini LED TV with “a special screen that reduces glare and reduces reflections for an art-like viewing experience” (so it has a matte coating). LG hasn’t specified the backlight configuration, but all of Art’s other TVs use edge lighting, so it’s a safe bet that it will too. OLED technology, while mini-LEDs offer superior image quality, is not able to display a single image for extended periods of time without concern for image retention (or burn-in).
LG has taken a cue from Hisense and included a frame with Gallery TV. The default frame is white, with an option to purchase an additional frame in an additional wood color. The TV will be available in 55- and 65-inch sizes, but pricing has not yet been released.
