Bungie’s is off to a marathon race, and everyone had a fresh start after the server slam beta test. None of the rare loot earned during Server Slam was intended to go into the game at the start of the game, but for a handful of lucky players, that’s exactly what happened.
As pointed out by an X user going by Nifty n00b (via Kotaku), there was in-game loot waiting in the mailbox. Marathon allows players to temporarily loan their items to other players in the game, which are then automatically returned to them via a mailbox. This is why a handful of players who have dropped their loot in Server Slam still have their items if they check their mailbox.
