Just a few years ago, Mercedes was confident about going to electric vehicles in Europe. In 2021, it predicted that by the end of the decade, it would stop selling cars with combustion engines, “where market situation allows.” Not only has the luxury brand dropped this promising purpose, but it has also taken 180 degrees. Without ice vehicles, the head of the company, Hanchu, believes the local automotive industry will fall. “
Interviewing the German business newspaper Handle Bluetta (Subscript requires)Ola Klenieis warned that if the sale of EU’s new combustion engine cars remains up to 2035, Europe’s automotive industry will increase:
“We need to examine the truth. Otherwise, we are moving at full pace against a wall. Of course, we have to decorate, but it has to do a technology in a neutral way. We must not lose our economy.”

Mercedes Boss, also president of the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA), has warned that the continent’s car industry will “collapse” if the European Union does not abandon. Before the regulators declared new ice vehicles illegal, Cleanis predicted that customers would rush to buy gas and diesel cars before the deadline, which will be implemented in nine and a half years, which “does not help the climate.”
Electric vehicles are nowhere to be imposed near the 100 % market share of the EU Union. In the first half of the year, the share of unmanned engine cars was only 17.5 percent of the European Union countries, the UK, and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) countries, namely Iceland, Lichtain Einstein, Norway and Switzerland. ACEA data also shows that plugins represent only 8.7 % of the hybrid total supply. Traditional hybrids increased by 35 %, but the figures include mild hybrids, which many people will argue that “true” hybrids are not.
The European Union’s 2035 ban has not been kept in stone, as it is scheduled to review in the coming months. However, recently, the European Commission (EC), the European Union’s executive arm, confirmed its commitment to exclude 0 g/km for new cars sold in the mid -decade. At the time, the EC said it would “speed up the preparation of a Co₂ quality procedure prediction for cars and vans,” the ban is a signal to re -evaluate.

Mercedes is the reason for worrying about the potential impact on their business. EV sales were only 8.4 % globally in the first half of 2025, which was less than 9.7 % in the same period of 2024. Even when PHEV, the power models make up only 20.1 % of the total delivery in the first six months of the year.
Whether or not the wise prevail, but in view of the EU’s strong opposition, it is hoped that the ban can be reduced to some extent. We will not be surprised if, the least, the plugin hybrid and perhaps the complete hybrid continues to be ahead of 2034.
