Microsoft is finally updating the design of the Run dialog prompt in Windows after more than 30 years. After committing to adding a dark mode for running, Microsoft is now testing a refreshed design that fits in with the Windows 11 aesthetic.
The overhauled Run prompt looks a lot like a modern launcher, but it works just like Run always has. The Run command has been part of Windows since Windows 95, allowing power users to launch apps with shortcuts such as “MSPaint” for Microsoft Paint, “Calculator” for Calculator, and “DXDIAG” for the DirectX diagnostic tool.
If you’re not a fan of the overhaul, you’ll also be able to toggle the advanced run dialog on and off in Windows 11’s advanced system settings. Microsoft hasn’t officially announced this advanced run prompt, but I expect we’ll see it officially appear in the coming weeks.
RayCast just recently launched on Windows, giving Microsoft’s operating system a powerful launcher, clipboard manager, shortcut system, and more. I’m hoping that Microsoft takes the time to change to a modern launcher like it’s been doing in recent years with the Command Palette and PowerTouts.
