Dutch telecommunications group Odedo said it was hit by a cyber attack that compromised customer data, although services are still running.
The mobile network, owned by buyout firms Apex Partners and Warburg Pincus, said in a statement Thursday that it contained the incident as soon as possible, and reported the compromise to the Authority for Personal Data. Passwords, call records and invoice data were not among the stolen information, according to the announcement.
Odido will notify affected customers within 48 hours, “due to the volume” of people affected, according to the statement. Odedo did not specify how many of its customers’ information was involved in the breach.
The telecommunications group recently postponed plans for an initial public offering in Amsterdam following a muted reaction from investors and corners to market volatility, Reuters reported. According to Apex Partners, it serves about 8 million customers.
Mobile data represents a valuable target for cybercrime groups and nation-state spies as deeply personal information is stored within telecommunications firms. Text message and call metadata, location information and customer billing data each contain details that could help attackers learn more about a person’s life or finances.
The European Commission said on February 5 that a cyber attack had gained access to its core mobile infrastructure. According to the statement, the breach may have resulted in hackers gaining access to some staff names and mobile numbers.
“As Europe faces daily cyber and hybrid attacks on essential services and democratic institutions, the Commission is committed to further strengthening the EU’s cybersecurity resilience and capabilities,” the European Commission said in a statement on February 5.
There has been no public indication that Odedo and the European Commission incidents were connected.
