Addressing homeownership barriers
The initiative responds to challenges faced by first-generation buyers, many of whom lack the financial resources and inherited knowledge that can help ease the path to homeownership.
A recent Bankrate report found that 78% of U.S. adults cite affordability as the top reason they do not own a home.
In 2024, Progressive committed more than $7 million to support families on their path to homeownership.
One of the cornerstone features of Open the House is The UpPayment program, which will provide $13,500 grants toward a home purchase for up to 100 qualified first-generation homebuyers.
Education, community outreach
The Open the House initiative also includes several additional programs such as:
- Open the House Tour: A mobile, interactive experience that will visit cultural events across the U.S. in 2025 to provide educational resources to aspiring homebuyers.
- Recipe for Homeownership: A video series featuring financial wellness experts and special guests discussing key aspects of the homebuying process.
- Home Appraisal Help: An online platform — launching later this summer — designed to guide homeowners through the appraisal process. Created in collaboration with The Appraisal Foundation, the resource will include educational content and tools to assist homeowners in understanding and preparing for home appraisals.
- Inherit: A short film produced by Progressive that explores the knowledge and financial resource gaps faced by first-generation homebuyers.
Progressive has also expanded its online tools and resources to guide buyers through the homeownership journey.
