Steve Pagliocca may no longer be the co-owner of the Celtics—his bid to buy the 18-time NBA championship winning team was rejected earlier this year—and he no longer owns an extensively renovated townhouse in Boston’s Back Bay neighborhood. The businessman, who currently serves as co-chairman of Bain Capital, parted ways with Bain TownPad for $11.5 million, slightly above the $11 million asking price.
The four-bedroom, seven-bathroom home immediately saw significant interest when it came up for sale, sparking a bidding war and spanning nearly 5,700 square feet.

The home includes two kitchens, with the larger one found on the third floor.

The buyer is Ron Sargent, the interim CEO of Kroger and the former CEO of Staples who earned his undergraduate and master’s degrees from nearby Harvard. George Serkis at Douglas Elliman represented both parties in the transaction.

Pagliocca and his wife, Judy, bought the corner property in 2015 for just $15.1 million. At the time, it was built as two condominium units, and the couple spent the next two years transforming it into a spacious home. Today, behind a beautifully restored classic red brick facade, the circa-1890 home is sleek and modern with designer-finished white walls and little of the original architectural detail.

A formal entertainment space, a combined living and dining room, with a service kitchen is on the main floor. A large exhibition kitchen is on the second floor. Here, a marble island anchors the cooking space, which adjoins the more casual dining area and family room. The fourth floor is devoted entirely to the primary suite, where a fireplace-filled bedroom flows into the bathroom with ample closet space. Frosted windows allow you to relax in the soaking tub without the prying eyes of the neighbors.
Several guest bedrooms are on the upper floor, which leads to a finished rooftop deck with city views, one of the only outdoor spaces in the entire home, while a gym sits on the lower floor with a private garage. There’s also an elevator that stops on all floors, as well as a heated front walkway and driveway that Sargent and his crew will appreciate during the snowy Northeast winters.
