- Toyota has issued a recall notice that affects 550,007 vehicles.
- 2021 to 2024 Toyota Highlanders and Highlander Hybrids have been recalled.
- The problem is a seatback mechanism that may not lock.
Toyota has been forced to recall more than 550,000 vehicles in the US. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), some models have a seatback mechanism that does not lock properly into place.
The recall affects the Toyota Highlander and Highlander Hybrid models, which run from the 2021 to 2024 model years. According to NHTSA, the total number of affected vehicles is 550,007. Toyota really sells. Tons of the hills. These are the affected models:
- 2021-2024 Toyota Highlander
- 2021-2024 Toyota Highlander Hybrid
The vehicles in the recall have a seatback that may not lock after you adjust it. This increases the risk of potential injury in an accident—or, indeed, it may even cause the accident. But the fix seems pretty easy.
Toyota owners can bring their Highlanders to their local dealer. The service department will replace the return springs in the setback mechanism at a cost of zero dollars. Well, minus your time and fuel, of course.
But it’s better to spend a few moments of your day making sure your seat stays where you want it.

Motor1’s tech: In this age of seemingly endless memo notes, this one feels pretty benign. Yes, it would be bad to have a Highlander with a poorly functioning seat. But you’ll also notice that the seat isn’t fitting properly and avoid possible injury as a result. Also, fixing seems like a pretty quick job.
