- According to Audi’s CEO, a new supercar is not out of the question.
- Gernot Döllner claims that a halo car is ‘thinkable someday’ but with the name R8.
- Meanwhile, an electric sports car is coming soon.
Audi’s lineup could definitely use more pizzazz. Thankfully, Ingolstadt is adding to the portfolio this year with a new RS5 sedan and wagon, while the next-generation RS6 is also due in 2026 in both body styles. But neither model makes up for the difference in the company’s range: the two-door car. With the A5, TT, and R8 in the rearview mirror, a coupe is sorely missed.
The German luxury brand aims to bridge that gap with the Concept C, due in the next two years. It will also make up for the lack of a convertible, as the electric sports car will feature an electrically retractable targa roof. Looking further ahead, the Audi boss is leaving the door open for another supercar.
In an interview with Car and driverGernot Döllner said that the halo model “is worth thinking about someday.” Lord of the Rings declined to revive the R8 moniker, just as the Concept C TT won’t wear the name when the production model arrives. Audi’s top brass didn’t go into further detail, but it’s fair to expect any supercar to borrow the platform under the Lamborghini Tampereio.

Motor1’s Tech: Logic dictates that a new supercar doesn’t rank high on the priority list, especially with the Concept C already green-lit for production. An exotic model may be enough, as Doelner has already admitted that sales will come in “very low five figures”. A more expensive model with Lamborghini roots would be an even tougher sell, though it would benefit from being powered by a combustion engine.
Using the Temerario as a foundation will speed up development and limit costs, but Döllner’s tone suggests an indirect successor to the R8 is still wishful thinking. With the arrival of an electric sports car around 2028, it’s unrealistic to expect Audi to compete with the raging bull this decade, if that happens.
